The power of performance

The last half term ended with a truly wonderful celebration of music. Not only did we see over 130 pupils perform during the two days of the St Swithun's Prep School Music Festival, but we also held a magnificent String Spectacular with the prep and senior string musicians performing together with Graffiti Classics—a comedy cabaret string quartet! I was delighted to hear such positive feedback from parents who attended these events and to receive a wonderful note from one mum who summed up the feelings of many:

“Our daughters are incredibly fortunate to be in a school environment which fosters such a wide range of music in such an all-inclusive way… It is hugely gratifying to know that every single girl at St Swithun’s Prep is given every chance to pick up an instrument and run with it.”

A huge thank-you must go to Miss Silvester and her team at the prep school, and Mrs Hall and Ms Wright and their team at the senior school for their inspirational tutelage; and of course to all of you for your tireless support with both music practice and enthusiastic attendance at performances!

The second half term has again started with a musical theme—with our Year 6 girls finishing their ‘Fame Academy’ performing arts projects at Factory Road Recording Studios in Eastleigh. This project not only allows the children to work together to write a song and compose the music to go with it, it calls upon their ability to work as a team and gives them real world experience of the music industry. The staff at the studios never fail to remark how ’cool’ it is that we do this project with children so young… it is one of the many unique things we do here at St Swithun's—and one of the many ways we look to celebrate individual talents and fearless creativity.
