Starting boarding? Top tips from current boarders |
As the new academic year starts, we asked some of our existing boarders at St Swithun's, an all-girls independent school in Hampshire, for their top tips on making the most out of boarding, and what they would want new boarders to know. These are their responses:
- “I’d recommend signing up for activities in the evenings and going to house events because it’s a good way to meet new friends and it’s really fun to join in the activities. We do all sorts of things like baking, crafts and games.”
- “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, the house staff are here to help and the older girls are happy to help if you need anything too!”
- “Make your room your own and personalise it, it’s nice to have photos from home and posters on your notice board.”
- “Bring enough clothes, but not too many as the more you bring the longer it takes to pack for each of the holidays! If you don’t wear it at home, don’t bring it! It is nice to bring one formal outfit for when we have parties and end of term events like the summer ball as everyone dresses up and we take lots of photos.”
- “Make sure you have your name on everything even your pyjamas because everything gets mixed up in the laundry room and some people have the same clothes as each other.”
- “Try to be friendly and lend a helping hand to others. Smile at others when you see them”
- “Boarding is what you make of it, so make it what you want it to be!”
- “Seek support, from friends or staff, when you need to as everyone will be more than happy to help.”
- “Everyone has different lifestyles so make sure you tell people if you don’t like them sitting on your bed or stepping on your desk. People will understand. And if you are told that, respect them as well.”
Our sixth formers had specific advice for boarders starting in L4 (year 7). The first year you can board at St Swithun’s:
- “Just have fun and relax!” (Alicia)
- “Make lots of friends. They really help if you’re homesick.” (Anna GJ)
- “This worked for me: decorate your area lots and lots. That turns it into somewhere to chill out that feels very homely.” (Isla J)
- “Stay tidy, to keep yourself organised.” (Maryam)
- “Try your hardest not to be scared. After the first few days, it will feel like a second home.” (Isla F)
- “You will get used to living with others. Always ask for help when you need it!” (Jae Hee)
- “Don’t be afraid to speak to the housemistress, resident matron or the older girls. Speak up!” (Noelle)
- “Bear no grudges against anyone.” (Ella)
- “Don’t bring loads of things. It’s hard to keep tidy and to pack up, if you do. Also, label ALL OF YOUR CLOTHES.” (Livia)
