Trips | Senior | St Swithun’s School, Winchester

At St Swithun’s school for girls in Winchester we are keen to provide our students with a wide variety of opportunities outside the classroom, not only to enhance learning but also to have fun, as the students develop new friendships and skills.

Recent highlights include a sixth form visit to Paris, where students immersed themselves in world-renowned art and its historical context, and a year 10-11 trip to Berlin, exploring key landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Olympic Stadium, and the last remaining section of the Berlin Wall.

Closer to home, our Duke of Edinburgh expeditions take students into the New Forest, Dartmoor and Snowdonia, building resilience, teamwork and leadership. Some trips are one-off adventures, while others are cherished annual traditions. The Year 10 exchange in Germany is highly popular, offering a chance to practise language skills and forge international friendships. Meanwhile GCSE geography students head to Blencathra for fieldwork, while those studying Spanish enjoy a cultural and linguistic immersion in San Sebastián where they also learn to surf and try the local cuisines.

Further afield, our geography students can explore Iceland’s dramatic landscapes and volcanic features, while Year 7 pupils enjoy an exciting sports adventure in Lanzarote.

Students passionate about global citizenship and marine life can take part in a community project based trip to Costa Rica, and in 2025 all attendees also became certified scuba divers.

Our international exchange partnership with Tara Anglican School for Girls in Sydney, Australia also offers a unique opportunity to live and learn abroad.

Each year, Year 9 students explore the Battlefields of WW1 or Berlin during a history trip, Year 8 take part in a study tour of Paris, and Year 7 enjoy a water sports weekend on the Isle of Wight. These trips are designed to complement the curriculum and support personal development, whilst also creating valuable memories the girls will cherish long after their time at St Swithun’s.

To complement our Sport provision, there is a winter term ski trip and a summer term trip to the United Kingdom Sailing Academy in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Each year all pupils are offered the following sports focused trips

  • L4: multisport and exercise tour to Club La Santa
  •  L5 - M5: Dubai for netball
  • U5 - U6: USA lacrosse tour

You will note that some of the trips are specifically linked to GCSE and A level courses, such as biology and geography fieldwork. Others such as language exchanges and visits enable the students to embrace different cultures and practise their language skills. In addition, through the sporting activities and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions the students can gain essential skills and qualities such as resilience, problem-solving and working as a team.

As we continue to broaden our provision of residential trips both at home and abroad, we hope that your daughter will look forward to participating in some of these exciting adventures.
