Introduction

The School History

St Swithun’s was founded in 1884 by Miss Anna Bramston, daughter of the then Dean of Winchester, who raised the necessary funds by subscription. The School's initial aims were based on "sound learning and true religion".

Over the years the School established a reputation for academic excellence. From the beginning the curriculum aimed at breadth as well as depth and sport, music, art and drama played an important part in the life of the School. Boarding houses were soon established and since then the School has always educated both day girls and boarders.

The School has moved twice in its history and occupied its present magnificent site of some 45 acres on the outskirts of Winchester in 1931.
