Poetry by heart

Congratulations to Jodie Russell U5 who won the St Swithun’s Poetry by Heart competition which took place in front of the judges and an audience of the school community on the evening of 6th March.

Jodie was competing against eight other very strong orators in the school but delivered accomplished renditions of The Ballad of Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde and God, A Poem by James Fenton to win first prize.

Jodie will now progress to the next round of the competition at the Discovery Centre in Winchester on 30th March, to compete against other students for the title of County Champion.  At the county stage, students will be asked to recite one poem from the Poetry By Heart anthology that was published before 1914 and one poem from the Poetry By Heart anthology published in or after 1914.

The final takes place at the National Portrait Gallery in April.

Other participants included Hatty Haines U6, Mary Gatenby U5, Hattie Thursfield M5, Eve Gatenby U5, Eliza Bacon M5, Amina Clayton U6, Cat Bar L6 and Chloe Evans M5.
