“Here we have something really special: sparky, fun and innovative, while maintaining traditional values and academic standards. A cosy school that allows pupils to develop at their own pace but is never lax.”
We acknowledge that the world of work depends on strongly developed skills in literacy and numeracy. We also know that the world is full of so much to intrigue, challenge, amaze and delight. We want our children to be, not merely spectators at life’s feast but participating citizens with varied accomplishments and proficiencies. The confidence to be gained from engaging in creative and physical disciplines promotes both a sense of life’s zest and its responsibilities.
Music
Music is a strength of St Swithun's Junior School. Music pulsates throughout the school. Thriving ensembles include the string and chamber orchestras, wind band and quintet, training, senior and chamber choir as well as the two steel bands. Advanced instrumentalists receive regular coaching in smaller ensembles.
Older girls are encouraged to use keyboards and drum kit to form their own bands. A Music Circus operates for younger pupils, where children gain experience of woodwind, brass and string instruments.
Individual tuition is offered in a wide range of instruments.
Drama
The children have many opportunities for performance, Drama is offered within the curriculum and as an extra-curricular activity in the very popular Music Theatre Workshops. As part of their education all children are involved in a Music and Drama production each year, these productions are of a very high standard and are highlights of the school year.
Art
All lessons take place in the purpose-built Art and Design Technology room and pupils benefit from working with many different media including paint, pastels, collage, clay and mod-roc. All children explore and experience a wide range of creative techniques and are encouraged to enjoy Art sessions regardless of their ability.
Technology
An appropriately equipped specialist room allows the children to engage in Art and Design Technology which form part of their regular curriculum. The approach is very practical and good staffing ratios ensure the children actively participate in 2D and 3D work. A designated Information and Communication Technology suite and interactive whiteboards in every classroom permit all children to become conversant with ICT and they certainly relish its immediacy and extensive opportunities.
