St Swithun’s sixth form pupils Clare Symons and Pippa Naegeli have successfully made it through to the regional round of the ESU (English-Speaking Union) Mace debating competition, the oldest national debating competition. The girls competed in the competition at Bedales School on 23rd November where they were successful to reach the regional round, to be held early in 2012.
The topic put forward for debate was whether computer games featuring violent actions should be banned. The girls showed strength of argument and eloquence in front of the ESU judges. Head of English at St Swithun’s Miss A Oliver said “Credit must go to the entire lower sixth debating society whose commitment and enthusiasm all term have led to such success. My congratulations go to Pippa and Clare who presented rigorous arguments and so confidently handled their opposition.”
