Pastoral – The Church

Close ties with Winchester Cathedral

St Swithun's is a Church of England foundation but girls of other denominations and faiths are welcomed. While pupils of all faiths are expected to attend its regular acts of worship, the School is sensitive and responsive to the different cultural, racial and linguistic backgrounds of its pupils.

There are very close ties with Winchester Cathedral. A School Service (which is compulsory for all boarders and weekly boarders and which day girls are encouraged to attend) is held there once a term, on a Sunday. On other Sundays, full boarders are expected to attend a service, either in School or in a local church. All girls attend an Assembly daily. A Confirmation Service is held in the Cathedral every year and Confirmation classes are taken by the Chaplain who is a member of the teaching staff. The Carol Service and annual Valedictory Service are held in the Cathedral.

The School has a small chapel which is used for Sunday Services, Communion Services, meetings of the Parents' Prayer Support Group and private prayer. It is in a quiet situation with extensive views of the beautiful Hampshire countryside.
