Last weekend St Swithun’s sailing team competed in the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association Southern Championships for the first time. The event, held at the Spinnaker Club, Ringwood, attracts some of the strongest schools racing teams in the south of England and is a day of highly competitive and intense sailing – a challenge for the newly formed St Swithun’s team with no racing experience.
With seven races in the groups stages, the girls took a couple of races to acclimatise and then recorded impressive wins against Sherborne, Bryanston and Millfield to put them in the bronze division for the knockout stages. They narrowly beat Claires Court in the semi-final before losing the bronze final against an experienced and well-trained Canford team.
The team, captained by the outstanding Charly Capon, should be proud of its first competitive outing and look forward with optimism to the forthcoming fixture against Winchester College.
St Swithun’s team: Charly Capon U6, Jess Parker L5, Ella Stewart L5, Jaisila Patel L4, Olivia Jones U4, Izzy Watson U4 Subs: Olivia Newman U4 and Georgia Onslow U4.
