Over 700 balloons have been launched to raise funds for scholarships at St Katherine's School in Uganda. This very successful 1000-strong girls' secondary school is in Lira, an area which has been severely affected by the war with the Lord's Resistance Army and many of the girls have had first-hand experience of the associated violence, abduction and displacement.
St Swithun's has been linked with St Katherine's for 15 years and we provide 21 scholarships for girls who have no other means to fund their education - there is no free schooling in Uganda.
The balloon launch has raised £1000, which will provide four scholarship places for one year. Yellow balloons were chosen because that is the colour of the uniform the girls at St Katherine's wear. Return labels from the balloons are now making their way back to School, including eight from France.
