Last weekend a team of sixth formers travelled to an Independent Schools’ U18 girls’ football tournament at Haileybury School. This was St Swithun’s first football competition following the popular introduction of football to the sports curriculum this year.
The team played five other schools including Haileybury, Bede’s, Hockerill, Malvern and St Clare’s. Joyous celebrations followed a win against St Clare’s placing St Swithun’s fifth overall.
The girls playing were Emily Sambook Smith, Grace Long, Yvonne Pickering, Georgia Tice, Helena Wakefield, Hattie Haines, Lucy Gimson, Ellie Fleming and Sophie Mayne. Player of the tournament went to goalie Ellie Fleming, playing for the first time in a full sized goal!
Sports teacher Steph Webb said ‘The girls loved playing and trying a new sport. It was a great experience’.
Two U15 football teams will be travelling to a competition at Haileybury in June.
