On 4th February we hosted a junior school girls’ cross-country event. The four St Swithun’s Junior School teams won the gold team medals in each age category with some outstanding individual runs and achievements. Other junior schools competing were Oliver’s Battery Primary School, Portsmouth High and Portsmouth Grammar School.
In the U8 category St Swithun’s Junior School girls claimed all three place medals. Emily won the race closely followed by Issy in second and Aleksija in third.
Runners were: Emily, Issy, Aleksija, Poppy, Amalia and Amelie.
In the U9 race Theya ran the race intelligently and won comfortably followed by a Portsmouth High School runner and St Swithun’s Junior School runner Erin taking third.
The St Swithun’s Junior School won the team medal.
Runners were: Theya, Erin, Amelia, Alice, Zofia and Alice.
The U10 race was set alight by a blistering start from a Portsmouth Grammar School runner who led the race for the first lap, but was caught and overtaken by St Swithun’s Junior School runners Hermione and Immy who took first and second place respectively. The team medal in this category was won by St Swithun’s Junior School.
Runners were: Hermione, Immy, Elfye, Penny and Amelia.
The final race saw the closest race of the morning with Issy and a runner from Portsmouth High School going stride for stride in the U11 two lap race. These two runners had quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack and battled it out. The nail-biting finish saw the runner from Portsmouth High School taking the win on the line.
The St Swithun’s Junior U11 girls won the team medal. The team were: Issy, Sasha, Erin, Grace, Louisa and Charlotte.
Director of sport at St Swithun’s Junior School Roger Marshall said “Well done to all the girls who have been running at lunchtime to prepare for this event and to all those who also choose to come out and run over their break time. It is so lovely to see so many girls making the most of the opportunities available to them at school. Well done girls”.
