On Sunday 13 October four girls from St Swithun’s Junior School took part in the South West regional biathlon championships held at Millfield School, Somerset.
The girls were lucky as they all ran their 800 metres before the heavy rain set in. Olivia Busher and Mia Clark (Y4) ran first in the U10 category. They both did really well with Olivia winning her heat in a time of 3:07. Iona Morley (Y5) and Anastasia Lawrence (Y6) ran in the same heat of the U11 category and they both ran a really sensible race. They were not put off by the initial sprint stampede at the start but they tucked in and then wound in all the others. By the start of the second lap they only had one runner in front of them and they took their time in overtaking her. They both looked really relaxed and comfortable with Anastasia winning this heat, just finishing ahead of Iona.
In the swimming pool the girls had to swim 50 metres. Olivia came second with Mia also looking smooth and strong. Iona and Anastasia were in the same heat together. They had a great start and were both a good distance ahead of the others. It was nip and tuck again and at one point Iona had the edge, but in the end Anastasia got the touch just ahead of Iona.
Overall the girls achieved some superb results. Olivia Busher won the bronze medal and Mia Clark was 24th in the U10 age group. Anastasia Lawrence was 7th and Iona Morley 10th in the U11s.
Olivia has qualified outright for a place in the nationals, whilst the other girls will need to wait and see until all the regional rounds have been completed.
