St Swithun’s hosted the annual U19 South West Lacrosse Rally on Saturday 12th October. Our 1sts, 2nds and 3rds competed against 15 other schools. It was an excellent day for all our teams and St Swithun’s finished as the most successful school in the tournament.
The 1st team won all their matches in the morning against Westonbirt, Wellington, St Bart’s and St Mary’s Calne. This qualified them for the premier division in the afternoon. They had decisive 3-0 victories over both Downe House and St Mary’s before drawing 3-3 against Cheltenham Ladies College. Unfortunately they lost 2-3 to Godolphin in the final match of the day. Their final runners-up position was the 1st team’s best result in six years.
Players of the tournament were Alice Hobhouse for her outstanding goalkeeping and Emily Sambrook Smith for controlling the midfield as well as finishing as top scorer with 11 goals.
After a slow and scrappy start against Wellington College, the team transformed into a disciplined and confident squad, beating St Mary’s Calne, Sherborne and St Helen’s and finishing first in their pool.
In the afternoon, there were nail-biting wins against local rivals Godolphin and Downe House. The final game of the day pitted St Swithun’s against St George’s. Both teams were unbeaten meaning that St Swithun’s had to defeat St George’s in order to win the tournament, which they duly did. Congratulations.
The 3rd team had a tough day as they were the only 3rd team in a 2nd team tournament. In the morning they narrowly missed out to Godolphin losing 3-2 but gained a draw against Cheltenham Ladies College.
In the afternoon the team played some excellent team lacrosse winning all of their matches to win their division. The players of the tournament were Rachel Carver and Ella Donaldson.
