The senior Parent Teacher Association is a friendly and active group of parents and teachers in the Senior School. There is an equivalent body for the Junior School.
Its main aims are to:
- promote close cooperation and communication between parents, teachers and pupils
- engage in activities which support and advance the welfare and education of the pupils attending the school
- help further the interests and maintain the profile of St Swithun’s School
- organise social events open to the whole school
- raise and donate money to the school and the charities it supports
The committee of the PTA meets each term to discuss its business and organise the regular events that are put on throughout the school year, such as a quiz night, drinks and tea parties, sporting tournaments, lectures and a biennial ball.
This year we are organising our annual PTA Quiz in November and we have a Burns Night in February. In addition, the year reps organise a social event each term for their year group so there are always opportunities to meet with other parents, particularly if you are new to the school.
The PTA funds are used to help finance various projects within the school. Following a very successful midsummer party in June, the PTA committee was able to donate £12,000 to the school's charities the George Pantziaraka Trust, Young Minds and Medical Detection Dogs. The tea tent at Sports Day raised £1,000 and the PTA quiz and Burns Night last year raised a combined total of just over £2,000. The school's chosen charities for the 2017-2018 academic year are Red Cross for Syria, Heads Together and Shoes4Change.
In recent years the PTA has purchased tents for use by girls undertaking Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, tents for use by the PE department at lacrosse tournaments, music stands for the music department and additional equipment for the fencing club. We also pledged £4000 to assist in the setting up of a school radio station. Throughout the winter and early spring we operate a tea tent at all home matches where we provide coffee and cakes which are always very much appreciated in return for a donation to our sister school, St Kathrine's in Uganda. Through these generous donations of parents we generally raise in excess of £1000 annually for this very worthwhile cause. Parents support in whichever form it takes is always appreciated.
The PTA manages the second hand uniform shop (SHU), and is always looking for new volunteers who can offer a few hours each term.
In addition, the PTA is always on hand to chat to prospective parents about life at St Swithun's. There is regular attendance at the school's open day events throughout the year.
The PTA’s constitution can be found here and parents are welcome to contact the PTA either at firstname.lastname@example.org or by writing to the school office, St Swithun’s School, Alresford Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO21 1HA. Minutes of the PTA AGM are available on request from email@example.com
