Nursery and Reception

For children aged three-five years, the nursery and reception classes provide a happy and secure environment where the children can make a smooth and natural transition from home to school. Within this setting the children can develop in confidence and in their ability to relate to and cooperate with other children and adults.


The curriculum in the nursery and reception years is based on seven areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

The children in nursery and reception learn through play and participate in a wide variety of well-planned, stimulating and enjoyable activities. Continuous assessment ensures that the children are supported and extended as appropriate to each individual. Activities include structured phonics, early number work, art and physical education.

The children benefit from child-initiated planning which allows them to influence the topics which are covered and allows the teachers to respond to the children’s interests and creativity. This is at the heart of all that we do, as we believe children learn best through experiential learning.


The children have permanent access to the outside in a safe and secure courtyard. In nursery we believe there is no such thing as bad weather! Often when it rains the children play outside in their tractor suits.

OFSTED graded the early years foundation stage as ‘outstanding’ and in our last ISI inspection the EYFS was also graded ‘excellent’ and ‘outstanding’.
