Following a very successful inaugural competition last year, the final of this year’s school music competition once again took place in front of a packed Harvey Hall last week. Representing their houses, over a hundred girls from all years took part in the first round at the end of the autumn term and the final fourteen girls performed in front of the rest of the school. Adjudicator, Jackie Kendle, head of percussion for Surrey Arts and a former member of several London orchestras, gave positive feedback and words of encouragement to each finalist. The standard was extremely high once again and each girl received fantastic support from the audience. The winners of the junior and intermediate categories were Anoushka Gulabani L4 (tenor horn) and Joyce Wu L6 ( clarinet).
The advanced category and overall winner was Agata Patyczek U6 who won the competition with an accomplished performance of Symphonie Espagnole by Lalo on the violin. As well as receiving the trophy, Agata now has the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra in the Founders’ day concert.
Venta took the prize for the house with the most points overall.
