St Swithun’s hosted 60 Year 10 students from across the South for a UKMT (UK Mathematics Trust) Mathematical Circle. This two day non-residential event consists of four masterclasses each day from a variety of wonderful maths speakers. This year’s speakers were from Harrow School, Winchester College, North London Collegiate School, St Swithun's School, Stockport Grammar School and Oxford University.
The sessions covered a wide range of mathematical topics from volcanoes to the Battle of Trafalgar, and astroids to infinity.
Schools involved were Reading School, Ranelagh School, Willink School, Kennet School, Denefield School, St Crispin's School, Thornden School, Oasis Academy Mayfield, Wilderness School, The Costello School, John Hanson Community School, Nomads Wood School, The Wellington Academy, King Edward VI School, Crestwood School, Lord Wandsworth College, Rookwood School and St Swithun's School.
Head of maths at St Swithun's Stephen Power said "I am so pleased that we have been able to host another successful UKMT Maths Circle. The 60 Year 10s who attended the two-day event have been exceptional, working very hard on a huge range of mathematical ideas with great enthusiasm and energy. Hopefully we have shown them some new and exciting areas and applications of mathematics and have inspired them to include the subject in their plans for the future".
