Making Merry in the Shakespeare Schools Festival

Orla Sawey and Thea Leeming M5 write: In early October 19 girls from L5 and M5 had the privilege of being part of the annual Shakespeare Schools Festival, taking to the stage to perform The Merry Wives of Windsor. We enjoyed every minute of it, especially the performance night and meeting other schools and seeing their performances. Our story follows Mistress Page (Freya Williams) and Mistress Ford (Emily Baldock) as they try to fend off the advances of Sir John Falstaff (Sasha Parker). We chose this play for its amazing comedy and its links to present day feminism and female empowerment. Our performance went very well; we managed to stay within our strict thirty minutes’ time limit and have clean stage transitions. SSF opened up the world of classical acting and Shakespearian language to us and boosted our confidence enormously.

“It was great to meet you and see the amazing work you and your cast have been up to. They did a fantastic job, with such a vibrant and playful production. We were so impressed, and it was such a pleasure to see your cast's enjoyment in making the audience laugh!  As I'm sure you know, you have a wonderful cast, and I really hope that they have benefited from the whole process, as well as enjoying their performance.”
