Imogen Wagstaff M5 writes: 18 girls from M5, including myself, went on the German exchange to Königstein near Frankfurt in the state of Hessen. We went to experience German culture first hand, and to see how different the St Angela Schule is to St Swithun’s, in addition to improving our spoken German.
Whilst we were there we went on several day trips. One was to Frankfurt, where we saw the Paulskirche and went in the Goethehaus (the birth house of Germany’s most famous poet and novelist, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, ‘the Shakespeare of Germany’). The other trip was to Gießen (twinned with Winchester), where we looked around the Mathematikum, which is an exciting and interactive museum about maths. We also tried some traditional German food, like schnitzel and “Grüne Soße”. Although there were some bitterly cold winds during our week’s stay we had a great time with our host families, and everyone is very much looking forward to our exchange partners’ return visit in April.
This particular exchange is in its 17th year, thanks to the hard work of Mrs Hayward, who has been organising it since the initiation.
