Junior skiers win 1st and 2nd at BISS ski races

Kate Grosscurth writes: Finally the day that we had been waiting for dawned; the day of the British Independent Schools Ski Race Championships in Hemel Hempstead.

By 8.15am race bibs/numbers were on and the practice session on the snowy slopes was well underway. After their warm-up, the girls nervously listened to the instructions from the race officials and worked out the fastest route down the special slalom course.

The girls waited at the gate for the countdown to begin before flying down the course and through the gates, at considerable speed.

All of the St Swithun’s girls successfully completed their first run and after a quick refuel and team talk they joined us back at the top of the slope for their second run. This time everyone seemed less nervous.

At the end of the races the girls' skill and determination had paid off. St Swithun’s U10 team gained 1st place and St Swithun’s U12 team gained 2nd place in their groups respectively.

Daisy Gates was our fastest U10 girl with an impressive time of 18.12 seconds and Lulu Hepworth was the fastest U12 with a time of 18.48 seconds.

Well done to Daisy Gates, Holly Gates, Izzy Green, Sophie Seifert, Alice Claisse, Lulu Hepworth, Melissa Trant, Serena Trant and Manimekhla Mittal. The girls’ training over the summer, their camaraderie and the impeccable way that they behaved throughout the day was a credit to St Swithun’s.
