Kate Grosscurth writes: Despite the very early start the junior ski team were excited as they waited for the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre doors to open. The girls were changed and kitted up quick as a flash and by 8.45am they were all out on the slopes warming up for their slalom competition.
I was most impressed with the girls enthusiasm and confidence on the slopes, especially as the majority of the other competitors were a lot older and lot bigger. There is rather a big difference in size between 8 year old girls and 14 year old boys. However, the girls didn’t let this put them off and they recorded some impressive times.
Holly Gates received a medal for being the 4th fastest U10 girl. Jessie Lapsa came in 8th place, Matilda Melhuish in 11th and Penny Niven in 16th. St Swithun’s A team came in 5th place overall.
The ski team (Daisy Gates, Izzy Green, Manimekhla Mittal, Katya Longden, Matilda Melhuish, Holly Gates, Jessie Lapsa and Penny Niven) should be very proud of themselves but a special mention goes to Daisy Gates for captaining the team so well and to Phoebe Gates and Elsie Lapsa for being excellent cheerleaders/mascots.
