Hosting the inaugural cross-country meet

On the 14th January, St Swithun’s Junior School hosted its very first cross country meet with Portsmouth High School and Oliver’s Battery Primary School. The conditions were perfect and the spectators were treated to some excellent races, as well as some hot drinks to keep them warm.

Each school was allowed to enter six runners into each age group with the first three finishers receiving medals and the first three from each school scoring to decide the overall team medals.

In the U11 race, Mia Goodale was just pipped to first place, finishing in 2nd with Charlotte Orman in 3rd. However the U11 team of Grace Burlison, Mia Goodale, Charlotte Orman, Sasha Law and Erin Mayes won the team event.

In the U10 race it was a clean sweep for St Swithun’s with Hermione Murray claiming first, Immy Watson 2nd and Grace Clark 3rd, which meant the girls along with Elfye Richards and Emily Maclay took the team prize as well.

In the U9 race Theya Dare Bryan won the race with a commanding performance, but Portsmouth High School finished 2nd and 3rd with Amelia Winward in 4th. PHS won the U9 team event.

Finally, the U8 girls took to the course, with Poppy Russell winning and Issy Hastie taking 2nd place. Aleksija Blow finished in third meaning once again the team from St Swithun’s took the team prize. The other team members were Amelie Bulpitt, Amalia Sargent and Ruby Ashbrook.
We now look forward to the second event in February where we also welcome PGS and hopefully a second primary school from Winchester.

Huge thanks to Mrs Sargent, Mr Watson Mr and Mrs Clark, Mia Clark and Amelia Marshall for helping to marshal and to Miss Iliffe for helping make sure everything ran smoothly. Thank you to Mr Law for supplying some great photos which can be seen here.
