Helen Carruthers - Housemistress
Helen Carruthers is originally from Fife in Scotland and has lived in Wiltshire for the past fifteen years.
Helen is joining St Swithun’s in September 2016 and is very familiar with the all-girls boarding environment. She has held residential positions in both The Godolphin School and St Mary’s Calne and is looking forward to getting to know all of the girls in High House.
Helen is also a member of the PE Department where her specialisms are hockey, volleyball, badminton and athletics. She enjoys spending much of her free time outdoors walking her Labrador cross Pointer, Bailey, as well as cooking, reading and going to the theatre.
Judy Martin - Assistant Housemistress
Judy read Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where she was organ scholar and also studied conducting. On graduating, she worked as an organist and conductor with posts at Exeter College, The Queen’s College and at Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. At this time, she founded the nine-voice professional vocal ensemble, Voces Sacrae, a group she continues to direct, and which has appeared on BBC Radios 2, 3 and 4, on national television in Australia, and has performed at venues both at home and abroad.
Judy has worked as Head of Music at The Abbey School in Reading, Director of Chapel Music at Worcester College and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin where she worked from 20023 until 2011.
In 2011, she returned to England where she worked as a freelance conductor and music teacher in Devon, living with her partner, Peter, and their black Labrador, Roxy.
Judy joined the staff of St Swithun’s School in 2015 as a music teacher and conductor, covering maternity leave. Her hobbies include cooking, reading, debating, animal welfare, foraging, walking, architecture and history.
