This year’s Founders’ day concert had a film music theme and was eagerly anticipated by the hundreds of girls taking part. This concert is often the musical climax of the year for the larger ensembles, before many members depart on study leave.
Concert Band opened the concert with a stirring rendition of Orff’s Carmina Burana and a medley of tunes by John Williams. Following performances from the clarinet choir and the senior string quartet, the first half was brought to an exciting end with a thrilling performance of the fast movement of Mayazumi’s Xylophone Concerto by Kimberley Tong U6, winner of this year’s St Swithun’s Music Competition.
The second half included more music from films including Star Wars and Indiana Jones played by Strictly Strings and the Percussion Ensemble. The evening was rounded off by Symphony Orchestra playing Pomp and Circumstance March no. 4 by Elgar, music from Titanic and a light-hearted romp through The Typewriter by Leroy Anderson. To finish, Kimberley played Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov arranged for marimba, accompanied by the orchestra.
