Michael Higgins workshop

This weekend two of our A level music pupils attended a composition workshop with Michael Higgins at Twyford School. Michael is well-known for his collaboration with Gareth Malone, writing arrangements and original material for the Military Wives’ choirs and his latest Voices project. At St Swithun’s we have performed his setting of May the road rise to meet you at the last two valedictory services.

The workshop was attended by sixth formers from around the county and the students were set the task of composing a vocal piece to the text of the Agnus Dei part of the Mass. The girls from St Swithun’s were able to talk individually to Michael about their work and he gave them guidance about how they could develop their ideas further. Olivia Wilson L6 said meeting the composer was, “very exciting and really useful”. Speaking with St Swithun's director of music, Mrs YiRu Hall, Michael commented on how impressed he was with the girls' knowledge of harmony; ability to write for voices and how much music they were able to produce in one afternoon.
