Olivia Wilson L6 writes: On the first day of the summer holidays, 28 members of Swithun Choir plus Mrs Hall, director of music, Miss Barter, assistant director of music and headmistress Ms Gandee travelled to Hong Kong for a full programme of singing and sightseeing.
The choir gave three outstanding concerts at Rosary Parish Church Hall, Christ Church, Kowloon and St John’s Cathedral which were enthusiastically received not only by the Hong Kong-based school community, including old girls, but also by members of the congregation from each of the venues. The chaplain at Rosary Parish Church said the choir was “the best student choir [he had] ever heard.”
Other highlights of the trip included a visit to Victoria Peak for the view of the harbour below, visiting the rural area of Ngong Ping to see the large bronze Buddha and a trip to Ocean Park theme park, with not only rides but the chance to see dolphins, alligators and (perhaps the most eagerly anticipated) pandas. There were also excellent retail opportunities at Harbour City shopping centre and Stanley Market. The tour was a wonderful musical experience and an insightful glance into a culture so different from our own.
