Bracing conditions in the Brecon Beacons

Emily Bhanu L6 writes: A week before the half-term break a group of 18 L6 gold DofE girls took a trip up to Brecon, Wales to practise navigation. The weather let us know it was not going to be an easy weekend as it began to snow on departure. After a quick debrief on arrival, we got our heads down for the night. We woke to snow the next day and pulled on every layer to spend the morning up ‘Sugarloaf’ mountain practising our basic navigation in low visibility and harsh conditions. Our final descent was marked by sliding down the hill on our map cases and gorging on cake when we arrived back at the lodge. We carried out an evening short walk to practise night navigation which was tough but all the groups made it back within good time. On the last day, each group was dropped off at separate points and challenged with how many points they were able to get to within a certain time period. After all making it back within the allotted time, we now feel fully prepared for our practice expedition at Easter.
