Art in the environment

Art in the Environment was the theme for the U4 activities from Wednesday 21 – Friday 23 May. We were joined by Dr Phil Harding, an archaeologist from Channel 4 television’s Time Team programme and the artist Caroline Gregson. Girls learnt about flint knapping and how to make sculptures from materials including stone, clay, flint, willow and other textiles.

The culmination of the week was a trip to Roche Court Sculpture Park, at Winterslow, where the girls participated in an interactive tour of the park and in workshops designed to encourage their enjoyment of art and to develop their discussion, analytical and observational skills. The programme for the day entitled Origins was specially created for the U4 girls and helped them learn about the connections between our landscape, archaeology and art-making in the 20th century.
